A week after joining the Hawaii football coaching staff, Aaron Price has a job title.
Price was named the Warriors’ offensive coordinator and receivers coach, head coach Norm Chow announced Wednesday afternoon. Price will help craft the offensive game plans.
Chow will remain as the primary play-caller and quarterbacks coach. Chow also announced:
> Chris Wiesehan, who was the offensive line coach last season, now will be in charge of the running backs.
> Chris Naeole, a Kahuku High graduate who played 12 NFL seasons, will be the offensive line coach.
» Keith Uperesa, who coached the running backs in 2012, is the new director of player personnel. Uperesa will oversee academics and compliance.
» Phil Rauscher remains as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator.
» Jordan Wynn, a former Utah quarterback, is the offensive graduate assistant who will work with the quarterbacks.
» Former UH receiver Ashley Lelie will remain on the staff, although his title has not been determined.
The assignment changes were prompted after Tommy Lee retired in December. He was the offensive coordinator in 2012.
UH then posted two openings — offensive coordinator and director of player personnel. The latter position was left open as a cost-saving measure last year.
Uperesa was recommended for the director’s job, opening the way for UH to hire Price and Naeole. Because the director’s position was recreated after a year’s hiatus, the nominee needed approval from UH’s top administrators.
Price and Naeole were introduced to the team last week, but their assignments could not be announced until after Uperesa was confirmed as director. That approval came on Wednesday.
Price is the son of Mike Price, who retired in December as Texas-El Paso’s head coach. The elder Price previously was head coach at Washington State, leading the Cougars to two Rose Bowl appearances.
Aaron Price was on UTEP’s staff for nine years, the past five as the Miners’ offensive coordinator. Chow praised Price for his experience and knowledge. UTEP and UH use similar offensive techniques and languages.
Chow said Naeole brings "presence" as a coach and former player.
Chow was Utah’s offensive coordinator in 2011 when Wynn was the quarterback. Wynn retired from football in 2012 because of an injury.
"He played for me, and I know what kind of experience he brings," Chow said.
