Charley’s Subs weigh flavors and health

In light of controversies surrounding a prominent sub sandwich company under fire for not living up to ad claims ($5 foot-long sandwiches for $6 in Hawaii, foot-longs that only measure 11 inches), maybe you’re in the market for another sub.

Charley’s Subs doesn’t do any advertising, preferring to let their sandwiches speak for themselves. Stop by anytime, and you’ll find slices for sampling.

The company is best known for Philly cheesesteak sandwiches that are lighter than you’d think. There really is a Charley, who started serving sandwiches with healthfulness in mind as an Ohio State University student. The beef is lean and nongreasy, and so are the fries. I like the basic Philly Cheesesteak ($6.69 regular, $10.29 large) with grilled onions, provolone, tomato and lettuce. A special sandwich is offered each month; this month, it’s mild steak and pepperoni.

Charley’s rise coincided with the Atkins carb-less movement, so a major component of the menu is salads that have all the greens of a sandwich, topped with your choice of beef or chicken ($7.59), and not a bun in sight. They address today’s gluten-free fixation.
