Man in wheelchair escapes Mililani fire
A man in his 60s who is confined to a wheelchair escaped life-threatening injuries following a fire at his Mililani home late this morning.
The man was treated by a paramedic crew at the scene of the Kahikinui Court fire and then sent to a burn center with first- and second-degree burns, the city Department of Emergency Services said.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig said the man appeared to have sustained burn and smoke inhalation injuries but managed to escape the burning three-bedroom, two-bath home.
Fire investigators on Monday afternoon determined the blaze was an accident caused by an electrical malfunction in a nightstand lamp in one of the bedrooms.
One bedroom sustained heavy damage while the rest of the house sustained moderate damage, Seelig said. Investigators estimated the damage at about $50,000.
