President Barack Obama chose to spend part of Thursday afternoon bowling and eating shave ice with his daughters, a departure from the daily rounds of golf this vacation.
A motorcade that included Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia left the president’s Kailuana Place vacation compound at about 1:40 p.m. and arrived at a bowling alley at Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe about six minutes later, according to a media report filed by journalists traveling with the president.
The entourage left the Marine Corps base about two hours later and went for shave ice at Island Snow at the Kailua Beach Center.
A stop for the presidential entourage during previous visits, the first family entered the shop with several family friends.
Obama emerged a few minutes later with green- and red-colored shave ice. Dressed in an untucked navy polo shirt and jeans, Obama greeted a small crowd that had quickly gathered outside.
Obama spent several minutes shaking hands and asking, "How are you doing?"
The entourage then hopped back into their vehicles and returned to Kailuana Place.
It was the second day of Obama’s return to Oahu after his vacation was interrupted to go back to Washington so he and Congress could negotiate a "fiscal cliff" deal. After reaching an agreement late Tuesday night, the president headed back and arrived early Wednesday.
He has spent much of his time here golfing with friends and working out at the Marine Corps base.
He also dined at Alan Wong’s with family and friends Wednesday night in McCully.
