Thousands filled the state Capitol courtyard Saturday to say aloha to Sen. Daniel Inouye. Inouye’s flag-draped casket was carried by a Hawaii National Guard honor guard. After the ceremony, it was placed in a large tent with the American and Hawaii flags behind it, as people lined up outside to pay their respects, starting with Inouye’s wife, Irene Hirano Inouye. Inouye is just one of a few Hawaii icons to lie in state at the Capitol, including U.S. Sen. Hiram Fong in 2004, U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink in 2002 and singer Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole in 1997.
