Honolulu police say a man tried to kill his wife with a hammer in this Waipahu neighborhood.

A 23-year-old woman is recovering in the hospital after her husband allegedly assaulted her multiple times with a hammer at their Waipahu home over the weekend before he fled and jumped off an overpass.

Anthony Kaai, 40, died at a hospital from multiple blunt force injuries from the impact in the fall, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s office. His death was classified as a suicide.

The attack occurred sometime before 11 p.m. Sunday. The couple lived in a two-story home on a quiet cul-de-sac on Apii Street.

A neighbor said he didn’t hear anyone arguing Sunday night and was only awaken by sirens and flashing lights from first responders.

Paramedics took the 23-year-old woman to the hospital in critical condition. She was upgraded to serious condition.

Police shut down Hiapo Street between Paiwa and Kuhaulua streets during the investigation.
