The brutality is upon them.
On paper, the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine entered the most unforgiving part of their nonconference schedule Saturday night against No. 4 Stanford. The Cardinal swiftly made it a reality with a 69-42 dusting of UH on the second day of the Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic.
Up next at 2:30 p.m. today: only top-ranked defending national champion Baylor, the Brittney Griner-led force still peeved by its loss to the Cardinal on Friday night.
There would be no letdown for Stanford the night after their 71-69 upset, which snapped Baylor’s 42-game winning streak. Preseason All-America junior forward Chiney Ogwumike had 15 points and 17 rebounds, and the Cardinal prevailed easily without any eye-popping offensive numbers.
"I think that this was the toughest one," UH coach Laura Beeman said. "Playing the first big-name team, that’s the toughest game. … Now we know what’s coming."
The first Division I head coaching victory under Beeman, 73-69 over Tennessee-Martin on Friday night, was a thing of the past.
A crowd of 983 saw the perennial Pac-12 champions methodically swing the ball for open shots and trips to the free-throw line. They built a 29-point lead with 8:28 to play, affording Tara VanDerveer’s backups plenty of court time.
UH redshirt freshman Ashleigh Karaitiana scored in double figures for the first time in her young career, going 5-for-13 for 14 points. She, better than any of her teammates on this night, combined aggressiveness with effectiveness. Kamilah Martin added nine points and six rebounds.
"At the end of the day, they’re just another team to play," Karaitiana said. "Obviously they’re a ranked team, but they’re just human beings. We can match up to them. Anyone can beat Stanford if you really want to. You just have to execute offensively and defensively. And we didn’t get the opportunity to do that every possession that we had."
UH (1-2) kept its turnovers down (14) after committing 23 against UTM. But the Wahine could not finish, shooting only 30.8 percent from the field.
That meant it wouldn’t stay close for long.
Stanford jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but the Wahine scored three straight baskets, then got within 14-13 on Karaitiana’s first career 3-pointer.
The Cardinal broke it open with a 14-0 run from there. UH did not get within single digits again.
UH shot just 25.9 percent in the first half and trailed 39-21 at the break.
No. 1 Baylor 82, Tennessee-Martin 67
Brittney Griner blessed the Stan Sheriff Center with a first-half dunk, the eighth slam of her college career that moved her past Candace Parker for the most in NCAA women’s history.
The returning national player of the year, who had 18 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes, was unaware of the record until told afterward.
"That’s cool. I gotta get some more now," she said. "I didn’t plan to dunk it, but I kind of was palming it, so I was like, ‘I might as well throw it down.’ "
The Lady Bears were still without preseason All-America guard Odyssey Sims, who injured a hamstring in Friday’s loss.
