Gant ready to take on a bigger role

Chris Gant will likely play a bigger part in the offense and on special teams against Boise State.

After a week’s rest, Chris Gant is expected to play a featured role as a receiver, as well as spell Mike Edwards on kickoff returns.

It was a dual job expected of Gant last week, when it appeared he had recovered from a shoulder injury. Instead, he never was cleared for contact drills. Gant was pulled from the travel roster Thursday, the morning the Warriors were to depart for Fresno.

"Coach wanted me to stay home and get healed," Gant said. "It was tough for me to watch (the game) on TV."

Gant was cleared to practice this week.

"The load is right back on," said Gant, who will be used as the single-side receiver and occasional kickoff returner. "I don’t have a problem with it. I’d rather have the load than not play at all."

Gant is capable of running 40 yards in sub-4.5 seconds. It is his ability to read coverages that earned him a role on returns.

"I’m not the fastest, but I’ve got good get-away speed," Gant said. "When I see a crease, I’m hitting it."

Shakeup on the O-line

Because of injuries, the Warriors are re-aligning the offensive line.

Sean Shigematsu, who had been bothered by an ankle injury, practiced as the No. 1 right tackle on Tuesday.

Mike Milovale, who had been starting at right tackle, moved to left guard in place of ailing Kody Afusia.

Dave Lefotu practiced at right guard. He has recovered from an ankle injury.

Chow said defensive tackle Siasau Matagiese, who suffered a shoulder ailment against Fresno State, will be ready to start against Boise State.

’13 opener vs. USC moved

Next year’s season-opener against USC at Aloha Stadium will move to Thursday, Aug. 29.

The teams opened this season at the Los Angeles Coliseum, with then No. 1-ranked USC beating UH 49-10. The teams have met eight previous times, with the Trojans winning each time.
