Project to start on Kauai to turn shipping container into housing
Kauai Community College will break ground today on a project to turn a used shipping container into affordable housing.
The site will be blessed at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Wayne A. Vidinha Sr. of Ke Akua Mana Church in an area on the campus known as “The Farm.”
The work will be done by students enrolled in the college’s introductory carpentry class, taught by instructor Robert Steurich.
“As builders, we should always be searching for ways to build affordable housing and maintain the existing housing stock,” said Steurich. “Students will learn building practices and procedures that result in a quality product.”
The project is sponsored by Ho‘ouluwehi: The Sustainable Living Institute of Kauai, which was launched by the college in January.
