An adult female Hawaiian monk seal garnered some international attention Saturday morning as she rested on Oahu’s south shore.

Dirk Steffens, host of the German public television show "Fascination Earth," shot footage of the seal for a television segment about monk seals. Steffens said he and his TV crew have been traveling the islands doing stories on the natural history of Hawaii.

The monk seal, known as "Irma" to staff at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is named after a nearby surf spot and is a frequent visitor to south shore beaches.

NOAA officials ask the public to call 220-7802 if they spot an endangered Hawaiian monk seal on the beach so they can keep people a safe distance away.
