"Gitmo," by Gary Waid and Shawn Corridan (Amazon Digital Services, $2.99): In their debut collaborative novel, the authors write of an adventurous ex-convict who, while attempting to get his life back together in Miami, is waylaid by an unexpected and illegal expedition to Cuba. (Corridan is a Honolulu screenwriter who attended the University of Hawaii.)
"The Being," by Michael Morisaki (AuthorHouse, $11.95): In this science-fiction novel, a high school dropout and auto mechanic is given a second chance at life when he is cured of terminal cancer and becomes a physics professor thanks to a time-traveling metaphysical presence. (The author, a retired physician in Los Angeles, grew up on Maui.)
"The Kahuna and I: A Remarkable True Hawaiian Story," by Victoria Kapuni (Balboa Press, $35.95; also paperback and e-book): An autobiography that chronicles the author’s journey from Philadelphia debutante to wife of a Native Hawaiian kahuna in Kaunakakai, via three marriages and a law practice.
"The White Bow," by Aleksandra Veble (American Book Classics, $9.85 e-book): The Kona resident tells her story of triumph over adversity while growing up as an independent woman in places such as Slovenia, Lebanon and Iraq.
"The Revolution Happened and You Didn’t Call Me," by Maged Zaher (Tinfish Press, $10): The latest poetry chapbook from the small Hawaii experimental publisher, with short, observant pieces from the Egyptian-born writer, who previously collaborated with Australian poet Pam Brown in an earlier work for Tinfish.
"Colors of Confinement: Rare Kodachrome Photographs of Japanese American Incarceration in World War II," by Eric L. Muller and Bill Manbo (University of North Carolina Press, $35): A collection of rare color photographs taken by hobby photographer Manbo that captures a broad range of Japanese-American cultural life in the internment camps. A revealing selection of portraits, public events and celebrations, edited by the director of the Duke Center for Documentary Studies.
