Two local divers encountered an aggressive, 13-foot tiger shark Sunday afternoon roughly 300 yards off Yokohama Bay, a Department of Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

The men were not injured, and lifeguards cleared the water and posted warning signs after the incident, Shayne Enright said.

Around 2:20 p.m., the shark approached the divers and hit one of the divers’ bags, Enright said. 

One of the divers attempted to fire his bang stick — an underwater firearm — at the shark, but it misfired. 

Lifeguards rescued one of the divers by personal watercraft after the other diver was able to swim to a rocky cliff and get their attention. 

Enright said that warning signs will be posted at the beach until 6:30 p.m., and lifeguards will stay on an hour later to watch the water. She advised beach goers to call 911 if they see any shark activity.
