South Point Road car crash fatal for Hilo man, 25
A 25-year-old Hilo man died Sunday from injuries suffered in an accident last week in Kau, Hawaii County police said.
The man was thrown from his 2001 Mercury sedan on South Point Road, about 5.5 miles south of Kamaoa Road, when his car struck a utility pole, ran off the right side of the road and rolled several times at 8:47 a.m. July 23.
He was not wearing a seat belt. A helicopter took him to Kona Community Hospital, where he died Sunday at 9:25 a.m. His name was not released Monday.
Police ask that anyone with information about the incident call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, ext. 229. It was the 21st traffic fatality in Hawaii County this year, compared with 15 at this time last year.
Agencies to meetwith residents on soil cleanup
LIHUE » State and federal officials plan to meet with residents to discuss plans to clean up former sugar plantation soil in what is now a residential neighborhood.
State Deputy Health Director Gary Gill will give a short presentation on the findings of the department’s investigation at a meeting Thursday at the Kilauea School cafeteria. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s William Duncan will discuss what steps the EPA will take, in coordination with the county and state, to clean up the site.
The agencies plan to remove soil contaminated with pesticides from the yards of two house on Aalona Street. They also plan to isolate contaminated soil on adjacent commercial property.
The neighborhood was built on the site of the old Kilauea Sugar Mill. Sugar cane farmers once mixed arsenic with pesticides.
