A desktop computer belonging to Kapiolani Community College Chancellor Leon Richards was one of three Apple computers taken during two office break-ins at the Diamond Head campus in recent days.
The computers were recently inspected and it is not believed any personal information such as Social Security or credit card numbers were among the data, said KCC Vice Chancellor Milton Higa. It is unclear, however, whether emails or other information could be accessed from the computers, he said.
The burglaries were similar to break-ins that have occurred this summer at UH-Manoa in which only iMacs and MacBooks were taken and other items, including other brands of computers, were left untouched, Higa said.
"Nothing else was taken or disturbed," he said. "They were very efficient."
Richards’ iMac was one of two computers taken during the break-in at the chancellor’s office on the second floor of the ‘Ilima Building on Friday night, Higa said. The other computer taken was a MacBook laptop that belonged to an executive assistant, he said.
On Tuesday night at the ‘Ilima Building, the first-floor student services office was broken into and a MacBook belonging to a school counselor was taken.
In part because only Apple computers were taken, UH officials don’t believe the thieves knew the laptop belonged to the chancellor.
In both instances, the burglar or burglars removed jalousies to gain entry, Higa said. All three computers taken were in highly visible and high-traffic areas, he said.
Ka Leo, the UH-Manoa student newspaper, has reported on several campus break-ins since May in which only iMacs were taken.
