Honolulu firefighters battled a wildfire Saturday in Kaena Point State Park above Keawaula, also known as Yokohama Bay, that burned approximately 500 acres of brush and grass.

The fire, initially reported just before 3:30 a.m. near restrooms at the park, spread up the flank of a ridge, then into the mountain cliffs.

According to a Honolulu Fire Department release, the fire was 80 percent contained as of early Saturday evening.

The fire advanced within 400 yards the Kaena Point Satellite Tracking Station, but had not damaged any of the facility’s property or interrupted operations. It also burned around several utility poles but did not disrupt power service.

HFD is being assisted by federal firefighters as well as the Honolulu Police Department, the Department of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter.

According to HFD, firefighters were hampered by a limited water supply, steep and uneven terrain, strong winds and high temperatures.

Firefighters remained on the scene until dark to protect the tracking facility and power lines and contain the blaze.
