Crews rescue 46 on Maui from flash flood at Waihee Stream
A large group of students and accompanying adults are safe after being caught in a flash flood today at the Waihee Stream on Maui, about 100 feet upstream from the mouth of the river, authorities said.
Rescue officials got a call Thursday at about 9:30 a.m. and fire units responded, officials said. When crews arrived, all students made it out to the banks of the stream, five of them with bumps and bruises.
A totoal of 36 students and 10 adults were caught in the stream, but none of them needed to be taken to a hospital by ambulance.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is conducting an investigation.
