ANAHEIM, Calif. » Mike Trout doesn’t go fishing for compliments. The way he’s been playing for the Los Angeles Angels, it’s unavoidable, though.

Trout hit an RBI triple in the sixth inning and a tie-breaking two-run single in the seventh and saved two runs with his spectacular speed in the outfield, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

"When you’ve got that much speed — and plate discipline — it’s not surprising to us," right fielder Torii Hunter said. "The thing that’s more impressive to me is the plate discipline and the clutch hits. And his speed can make up for bad routes in the outfield. I like him a lot."

Hunter isn’t the only one.

"He’s a good player — a real good player," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "He’s got speed, a little pop in that bat, and he makes contact. He’s an exciting-looking little player."

Waipahu grad Jerome Williams (6-2) allowed two runs and seven hits over seven innings and struck out four against the AL West leaders.

The Angels won for the ninth time in 11 games, reducing the Rangers’ AL West lead over Los Angeles to 41/2 games after they trailed by as many as nine games on April 30.

David Price scattered four hits over 7⅓ innings, Hideki Matsui homered and host Tampa Bay beat Baltimore.

Giants 4, Cubs 3

Melky Cabrera remained the hottest hitter in the National League, Madison Bumgarner picked up his first win in nearly four weeks and San Francisco beat visiting Chicago.

Cabrera had two hits to raise his average to .376, tying him with Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox for the highest mark in the majors.

That comes on the heels of his outstanding May, when he tied a franchise record with 51 hits.

Wilin Rosario hit a two-run homer and host Colorado took advantage of four Dodgers errors to romp past Los Angeles for its season-high fifth straight win.

Jay Bruce homered and drove in two runs to back a solid performance by Mike Leake and visiting Cincinnati beat sliding Houston.

Pirates 8, Brewers 2

Pittsburgh scored six runs off Randy Wolf in the third inning, then went on to pound host Milwaukee. Ryan Braun left the game with a right hip strain, after sitting out Thursday night’s game because of lingering tightness in his right Achilles’ tendon.

Hunter Pence hit a two-run homer, Hector Luna had three RBIs and host Philadelphia beat Miami.

Padres 7, Diamondbacks 1

Jesus Guzman’s pinch-hit two-run homer ignited a sixth-run eighth inning and lifted the Padres to a win over the visiting Diamondbacks.
