West Maui is starting to loom large on local airlines’ radar.

Island Air said Wednesday it will add two flights a day between Honolulu and Kapalua Airport on Maui starting June 15, bringing its total daily flights to 12.

The announcement came two days after Mokulele Airlines said it was returning to Kapalua after a three-year absence and would offer four flights a day beginning July 1.

Island Air flies 37-seat Bombardier de Havilland Dash 8 aircraft while Mokulele Airlines uses nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravans.

"In mid-April, we filed additional service for Kapalua based on improving market performance," Island Air CEO Lesley Kaneshiro said. "The West Maui traveling community has been solid and we’ve been anticipating growth for quite some time. Our expanded Kapalua service enhances what West Maui already has to offer."

Island Air offers 352 weekly flights between Oahu, Kahului and Kapalua, Molokai, Lanai, Kauai and Kona.

The 32-year-old airline is offering $20 discounts on round-trip tickets and $10 off one-way tickets bought online by Friday for travel on any of its routes through July 12.
