Honolulu police detectives said they believe James D. Walters III, who was described as armed and dangerous before his arrest Tuesday night, committed four violent crimes that took place over five days last week.
Walters, 31, was arrested at a Date Street apartment complex late Tuesday by police Crime Reduction Unit officers after a CrimeStoppers bulletin had been issued earlier that day asking for the public’s help in finding him.
Police originally described Walters as a suspect in armed robberies in Waikiki and Lanikai. Following his arrest, witnesses identified Walters as the suspect in two more crimes.
Police said Walters is suspected of these crimes:
» At about 4:55 p.m. April 18, a 39-year-old woman said she was sitting in her parked car at Kailua Beach Park when a man got in with what police described only as a dangerous instrument. Police said the woman’s toddler son was in the back seat. She was ordered to drive away, and the man demanded her property. After a short distance he told her to pull over, then fled.
» At about 10 p.m. Friday, a man with a handgun robbed a family of four visitors walking on the Ala Wai Canal bridge at Ala Moana Boulevard.
» At about 12:45 p.m. Sunday, a man said he saw a stranger in his parked vehicle on Onekea Drive in Lanikai. When the car’s owner confronted him, the intruder threatened him with a handgun, then fled.
» At about 7 p.m. Sunday, the L&R Drive Inn on Kamehameha Highway in Kaneohe was robbed by a man with a rifle who demanded money. He was seen driving off in a black pickup truck.
Walters, who has a Windward Oahu address, does not have a criminal record. Charges including kidnapping and robbery are pending.
