Police closed parts of Punchbowl and Halekauwila streets for nearly two hours Monday after a suitcase left in the area was deemed suspicious.
The suitcase was reported at about 12:40 p.m. along Punchbowl Street on a bench at a bus stop on the Diamond Head side of the Prince Kuhio Federal Building, makai of the Halekauwila Street intersection near a driveway to the federal building parking garage.
An officer from the bomb disposal unit scanned the suitcase with an X-ray device and determined it was not explosive, patrol Lt. Randall Arakaki said.
Police closed the streets at about 12:45 p.m. and reopened them at 2:42 p.m. Punchbowl Street was closed from Queen to Pohukaina streets; Halekauwila Street, from Ala Moana Boulevard to South Street.
The federal building remained open during the investigation, although pedestrians needed to enter from the mauka and makai entrances of the complex. The Circuit Court building across Punchbowl Street was closed for the state Kuhio Day holiday.
