7 pounds of methamphetamine seized; 4 people arrested

Three men and one woman were charged today with possession of methamphetamine after FBI agents and Honolulu police officers made a large drug bust Tuesday and recovered seven pounds of "ice" from an apartment in Waikiki.

Charged by criminal complaint in U.S. District Court were: Mayday Pakele, Colonel Pakele, Faataoto Mauga, and Tapusilia Vaifale.

"This operation was the result of months of cooperative investigation between the FBI and Honolulu Police," FBI Special Agent Tom Simon said. "This type of federal-local partnership could be the model for major Hawaii drug investigations in the future."

Mayday Pakele and Tapusilia Vaifale were arrested about 2 p.m.Tuesday after they tried to sell four ounces of methamphetamine to an undercover officer in the parking lot of McDonald’s, 4561 Salt Lake Blvd., the criminal affidavit said.

Mauga was arrested later that day at his home at the Windsor, 343 Hobron Lane, where he was awaiting the profits from the sale in Salt Lake. Agents served a search warrant on Mauga’s condo and seized about seven pounds of methamphetamine and $70,000 in cash.

Colonel Pakele was arrested about 10 p.m. in a van in the parking lot of Temple Valley Shopping Center in Ahuimanu, Simon said.

According to court documents, an undercover Honolulu police officer bought an eighth of an ounce from Colonel Pakele and Mayday Pakele on Aug. 30. Colonel Pakele told the officer that he and Mayday Pakele got their drugs from Mexicans and that they could provide the undercover officer with pounds of methamphetamine at anytime.

On Sept. 7, the undercover officer bought one ounce of methamphetamine from the Pakeles for $2,400 at the boat ramp near Kahaluu Regional Park. The methamphetamine was later tested at 99 percent.

Less than two weeks later, an undercover officer arranged to meet Mayday Pakele at the boat ramp near Kahaluu Regional Park and bought three ounces of methamphetamine off of her for $6,600.

On Feb. 17, an undercover police officer bought two ounces of methamphetamine for $4,200 from Mayday Pakele and her associate Vaifale at the McDonald’s in Salt Lake.

The undercover officer arranged by phone on Feb. 28 to buy four ounces of methamphetamine from Mayday Pakele and Vaifale at the Salt Lake McDonald’s. After Vaifale and Pakele handed over the drugs, they were arrested by federal agents and police.

All four are being held without bail at the federal detention center. Their detention hearing has been scheduled for Monday.
