Senate committees are expected today to take action on Senate Bill 2511, which would collect a fee of 10 cents for any plastic single-use checkout bag a customer requests at the supermarket and other stores. That meeting is set for 2:51 p.m. (yes, that’s the precise time listed) in room 225.
The money raised is supposed to go to a fund dedicated to projects to protect Hawaii’s watershed. That’s a noble cause, right?
Some of us who have piles of these bags wadded up in cabinets and drawers are wondering if there’s a cottage industry in this. What if people un-wad the bags and then stand by the checkstands, offering them for, say, a nickel apiece? That would be not so noble, right? Right.
Bruno acts up, but stays cool
We’d all like to think his Hawaii upbringing has something to do with Bruno Mars’ ability to roll with what must have been a disappointing outcome after Sunday night’s Grammy Awards show.
The audience clearly loved his stellar, retro-styled performance, decked out in a shiny gold blazer. But almost immediately afterwards, Mars endured the first of several disappointments, losing the Best Pop Song award to the star of the night, Adele. Social media crackled with comments about Mars’ foot-stomping reaction, but most people concluded he was just acting up for the camera.
Later, Mars played a 15-minute set at a star-studded post-Grammy gala. "Welcome to the loser party," he reportedly joked.
Consolation prize: Mars’ music got a Grammy sales bump on iTunes and elsewhere. So it’s all good.
