The Mid-Pacific Institute girls soccer team lost 15 games in winning the past two Division II state championships, but the Owls stay on top by winning every game that matters.
Mid-Pacific beat Hawaii Prep 1-0 Saturday in the D-II final of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts State Girls Soccer Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
The Owls, who finished this season 8-6-1 with all six losses to ILH powers Punahou, Kamehameha and ‘Iolani this year, threw a shutout to repeat as champions.
"Two in a row, everyone doubted us last year," AJ Johnson said. "We did it last year and we brought it again this year. We are really strong as a team this year."
Johnson scored for Mid-Pacific in the 17th minute. After Julie Khil drew a foul, the Owls got a corner kick and Taylor Higa blasted a shot at Ka Makani keeper Hannah Unger. Unger corralled the hot shot but let it bounce off her hand about waist high to a waiting Johnson, who tapped it in, and the Owls had the lead.
"We do this play, a short corner play," Mid-Pacific coach David Pai said. "Taylor Higa got a good shot, it was just a scrum. I think one of them blocked it into one of our players. It was just fortunate."
Johnson was playing with a brace on her knee after injuring it in the preseason during a double-overtime loss to Ka Makani. Her knee was feeling much better after the game.
"It was a little bit of redemption for her," Pai said.
The Owls had eight shots to HPA’s seven in the first half, but only one of them was accurate enough to require a save.
Ka Makani (15-2) started slow, but got their shots in the first half while struggling with accuracy issues. They had no such issues in a frantic final 3 minutes.
"It’s a special group — they don’t go down without a fight," HPA coach Steve Perry said. "It didn’t go in, but it’s a wonderful group. I think we started a little bit nervous, but I am so proud of the way we finished."
When the referee signaled 2 minutes remained, Ka Makani really went to work.
Nanea Tavares juked Mid-Pac’s Marie Moriwake and blasted a shot off the crossbar just moments before HPA blasted a lower shot that Owls keeper Sarah Poppinga barely contained.
"They were bringing it," Johnson said. "We were nervous, we were scared but we stuck together as a team and we kept our title."
