An overdue hiker, described by the National Park Service as "poorly prepared," was able to make way off Haleakala today, park rangers said.

The Maui Fire Department launched an air and ground search for Phil Meyers, 58, of New Jersey, Sunday night after he didn’t show up at the trailhead as planned Sunday afternoon.

Crews searched from 8 p.m. until about 11:30 p.m. Sunday and resumed the search this morning.

Park rangers said Meyers began the hike at the Halemauu trailhead at the 7,990-foot level and planned to hike 11 miles into the crater and off the mountain by the end of the day.

Rangers said Meyers did not have a trail map and despite "inadequate preparation, water, and clothing," was able to hike out through Kaupo Gap.

Meyers exited the trail about 9:20 a.m. and was picked up by a motorist on Piilani Highway, a county spokesman said. Meyers was taken to the Makawao Fire Station to be medically evaluated. He had no major injuries, just bumps and scrapes, the county said.
