Mauna Kea gets dusting of snow

Snow covers Mauna Kea Saturday in this view from Hilo.

It’s not exactly a winter wonderland, but people in Hawaii have a chance to see snow on Christmas Day.

After a dusting of snow overnight, officials at the University of Hawaii’s Mauna Kea Weather Center reported areas of patchy snow on the upper elevations of Mauna Kea on Saturday.

Forecasters didn’t expect any more snow to fall over the weekend, but with the temperatures expected to only rise into the 30s during the day, the snow that did fall on the mountain is expected to remain on the ground.

Officials said the Mauna Kea Access Road was open to the public Saturday morning, but they also cautioned that a change in the weather could create hazardous driving conditions.
