Four-way tie atop Hawaii State Open golf
Samuel Cyr, Dean Wilson, Eric Dugas and Sean Maekawa are at 3-under-par 141 and tied atop the men’s open division after the second round of the Hawaii State Open played Saturday at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Arnold Palmer and George Fazio courses.
John Oda is fifth, one shot back of the leaders. Nick Sherwood, Tony Finau and Kent Fukushima are tied for sixth at 143.
Ayaka Kaneko leads the women’s open division by three shots at 6-under-par 138. Katie Kempter is second, and Britney Choy and Allisen Corpuz are third at 144.
In the men’s A flight, Kimo Green leads by three shots with a total of 154. Lance Taketa and Ron Castillo lead the men’s senior open division by one stroke at 141.
Today’s final round will be played on the Palmer course starting at 7:40 a.m.
Moanalua alum Lee runner-up in wrestling
Moanalua High graduate Stephany Lee lost by decision in the final of the 158.5-pound weight class at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships on Saturday at Arlington, Texas.
Iris Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., (U.S. Army) beat Lee in the freestyle division 0-1, 1-0, 1-0. Lee now resides in Colorado Springs and wrestles for Sunkist Kids.
Two male wrestlers from Hawaii competed in the 211.5-pound Greco-Roman division. In the third-place match, Honolulu’s Jake Clark (Minnesota Storm) beat Daren Burns (Greensboro, N.C.; YES Wrestling) by decision 6-0, 0-2, 1-0. In the fifth-place match, Moises Hernandez (Camp Lejeune, N.C.; U.S. Marines) beat Ewa Beach’s Marcus Finau (New York AC/USOEC) by decision 2-1, 2-0.
Chang leads BYUH men past Bethany
Jet Chang scored 29 points and Jake Dastrup added 11 as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Bethany College (Kan.) 84-62 in a men’s basketball game Saturday night in Laie.
Bracken Funk and Lawrence SeQuan both had nine rebounds for the Seasiders (3-6).
Haydon Parks scored 15 points and Chris Dean added 11 for Bethany (3-8).
Western Oregon women top BYUH
Rylee Peterson scored 24 points to lead five Western Oregon players in double figures in an 86-69 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii in a women’s basketball game Saturday in Laie.
Taylor Mann led the Seasiders (1-7) with 17 points and Shayla Washington added 16.
Peterson made four 3-pointers for Western Oregon (3-8).
