Hawaii isle man is charged in meth case
A 56-year-old Keaau man was charged Wednesday with methamphetamine trafficking after police found crystal methamphetamine, or "ice," at his business in the Shipman Industrial area of Hawaii island.
Larry Lee McCormick was charged with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking and two counts each of promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police said vice officers served a search warrant at McCormick’s business Tuesday and found 33.4 grams of ice. The drug was packaged for distribution in more than 30 plastic bags in one-eighth-ounce quantities, known as "eight-balls," and smaller. A digital scale and other drug trafficking paraphernalia were also recovered.
McCormick’s bail was set at $570,000 and he was being held Friday at the Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
A 21-year-old Keaau man was also arrested, but later released pending investigation.
Visitor found off South Maui beach dies
A Washington state man died Friday after being pulled from the water where he was stand-up paddling near Charlie Young Beach in South Maui.
Maui police, firefighters and lifeguards responded after Xivbin Zeng, 42, of Sammamish, Wash., was reported missing at 11:11 a.m., Maui police said. Rescue personnel found him unresponsive at 12:15 p.m. He was taken in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died.

Garden Island police get new deputy chief
Michael M. Contrades, a 17-year veteran of the Kauai Police Department, was appointed deputy chief Friday, Police Chief Darryl Perry announced.
Contrades joined the department in July 1994. He has served as a supervisor in the Patrol Services Bureau in the Waimea and Lihue districts. He is a former property crimes detective and oversaw the department’s asset forfeiture program while assigned to the vice unit.
He has served as Hanalei district commander, was promoted to captain in January and assigned to oversee operations in the Patrol Services Bureau. He helped develop the Kauai Police Activities League Youth Center in Kapaa, the department said.
