No tsunami from Indonesian earthquake
JAKARTA, Indonesia >> The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.1 earthquake has struck off the shore of a central Indonesian island. Local officials say there have been no initial reports of damage and that there is no danger of a tsunami.
The U.S. agency says the quake struck at 3:52 local time (0752 GMT) Tuesday about 71 kilometers (44 miles) southeast of the Sulawesi island town of Gorontalo. It was centered about 160 kilometers (100 miles) beneath the Molucca Sea.
Dedi Sugianto, from the Indonesian meteorological agency, says there is no danger of a tsunami given the quake’s depth.
Yudi, a local official in Gorontalo, says the quake was felt strongly for 20 seconds but that there were no reports of damage.
