Police arrested a 31-year-old man Tuesday morning following a car chase that led them from Manoa to Pali Highway and Waimanalo before ending on Kamehameha Highway near Hawaii Pacific University’s Windward campus.
No one was injured, but there were three minor traffic accidents along the way, police said.
The male driver, who has an extensive criminal record, was arrested on suspicion of forgery, identity theft, promoting a detrimental drug, reckless driving, burglary, fleeing the scene and a $30,000 contempt warrant.
A female passenger, 20, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, refusing to stop and hindering prosecution.
On Jan. 26 the driver was arrested at a Kualoa home on armed robbery and burglary charges. A standoff with police SWAT officers shut down Kamehameha Highway for three hours before he surrendered peacefully.
On Tuesday, officers with the East Honolulu Crime Reduction Unit spotted the man, who had been wanted on a warrant, driving a van in Manoa at about 10 a.m., police said.
Police vehicles and a police helicopter followed the van along Makiki back roads before it continued onto Pali Highway in Nuuanu. Officers were unable to stop him, and a chase ensued that took them to Waimanalo and back into Kailua, police said.
Witness Steve Kapela was heading toward Kailua on Kalanianaole Highway when he saw a police roadblock set up at Castle Junction.
Kapela said that to avoid the scene, he turned right onto Ulupuni Street, the last turnoff before the junction. As he neared a T-intersection on Ulumawao Street, his car almost was hit head-on by a green van speeding toward him, Kapela said.
At least eight police cars were behind the van, which was sparking, presumably from wheels with flattened tires, and had extensive damage to its front grille and left fender, Kapela said.
The chase ended on Kamehameha Highway at HPU’s Hawaii Loa campus when the van stopped at about 10:30 a.m., police said. The male driver attempted to run away but was chased down by officers, some of whom were taking part in a traffic safety sign-waving event along the highway in front of the HPU campus.
The man had been wanted on a forgery count as well as a contempt charge before Tuesday’s incidents, police said. He allegedly forged a check earlier this month, police said.
He had been imprisoned for 10 years after being found guilty on a variety of charges including burglary, auto theft and escape, according to state court records.
