The area code is 808, but a stretch of Oahu’s North Shore is the territory of Brigham Young University.
Hawaii football player Richard Torres said he was raised in Kahuku, a 5-minute drive from BYU’s Hawaii campus.
He worked at the Polynesian Cultural Center, which is owned by BYU, whose main campus is in Provo, Utah.
"From where I’m from, BYU is a big school," said Torres, whose Warriors play BYU on Saturday at Aloha Stadium. "A lot of people from my community love BYU. This game will be about bragging rights."
As a UH freshman, Torres remembered working at the PCC alongside BYUH students.
"It was BYU this and BYU that," Torres said. "Here I was, a University of Hawaii person, just smiling."
Torres said he always wanted to be a Warrior. As a Kahuku High senior in 2007, Torres did not receive any interest from BYU.
Torres’ father, Reggie Torres, is the head coach of Kahuku, the state Division I football champion. He acknowledges the area’s primary colors are Kahuku red and BYU blue.
But for this game, Reggie Torres said: "I’ll be wearing green."
Rolo asked to show BYU highlights
After Monday’s meeting, several UH offensive players begged the coaches to show the highlight video of the Warriors’ 72-45 victory over BYU on Dec. 8, 2001.
In that game, Nick "Rolo" Rolovich, now the Warriors’ offensive coordinator, threw for 543 yards and eight touchdowns. Ashley Lelie had eight catches for 262 yards and two scores. Lelie, now a UH student assistant, was the Denver Broncos’ first-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft. Chad Owens, now playing in the Canadian Football League, scored on a punt return and 100-yard kickoff return.
"It was a big-time game," UH quarterback David Graves said. "Rolo had a great game. I asked Rolo about the week of preparation for that game. He said it was no different from any other week."
One other thing hasn’t changed.
"They were doing a lot of the same (offensive) stuff we’re doing today," Graves said. "We just have to go out and execute."
Edwards to have surgery after season
UH head coach Greg McMackin said Mike Edwards will undergo shoulder surgery in the offseason. McMackin said Edwards will start this week, and that he does not risk further injury by playing.
Slotback Miah Ostrowski and defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu also will play against BYU. Both were sidelined for a few series during last week’s Tulane game.
McMackin said punt returner Scott Harding is recovering from a sprained ankle.
