Retired Army Lt. Gen. Alexander Mulqueen "Sandy" Weyand, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks from 1980 to 1982, died May 21 in Clarke County, Va. He was 82.

The Philadelphia native graduated in 1951 from West Point, where one of his classmates was Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, who in 1969 would become the second man to set foot on the moon.

Weyand served 34 years in the Army, including combat commands in the Korean and Vietnam wars and commands in the U.S., Europe, the Pacific and Asia. He finished his military career as commander of the U.S. Army, Japan/IX Corps. Among his decorations are the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star and the Purple Heart.

After he retired from the Army in 1985, he became superintendent of Valley Forge Military Academy and College in Wayne, Pa., where he served until 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, children Kim, Michael, Scott, Julie and Beth, sister Mary Quinn, nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Weyand was buried Sept. 29 at Arlington National Cemetery. The family suggests donations in his memory to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
