Details were still sketchy, but preliminary reports said the odor overcame about 10 federal Transportation Security Administration workers at the central security checkpoint just before 7 p.m., said state Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Meisenzahl.
Airport firefighters and a Kauai County hazardous materials crew were sent to investigate. The roads going into the airport and the security checkpoint were closed for about 40 minutes while officials investigated.
No flights were canceled or delayed, as two other checkpoints were opened.
Meisenzahl said firefighters were investigating the source of the odor. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the workers had to be hospitalized.
