Mililani’s Wayne Miyashiro rolled a 246 in his first game and posted five solid scores after that to take a 13-pin lead in the HHSAA/Billy Tees Bowling State Championships at Hilo Lanes on Hawaii island Thursday.
Miyashiro, who tied for 32nd in last year’s state championship, followed his 246 with scores of 204, 221, 222, 185 and 195.
Kevin Oshiro of Pearl City is in second with 1,260 pins, followed by Travis Lee of Roosevelt (1,237). Nicholas Azumi (1,154)and Sheldon Naauao (1,148) round out the top five to put the defending champion Chargers in first place of the boys team event by 386 pins over Mililani and 531 over Hawaii Baptist.
Micah Lee posted a 1,132 to give Pearl City four of the top 10 bowlers. Aaron Rafael (1,097) is in 19th and Shawn Nakanishi (1,091) in 20th for the Chargers.
Jaren Apana had the high game Thursday, opening with a 266 but failing to break 200 in four of his other five games to sit in 12th place.
Martin has big lead
Jaymie-Rae Martin of Island Pacific took a huge lead in the girls’ tournament, starting out with a 223 and following it up with a high score of 226 to lead defending champion Tammi Sakaguchi of Kalaheo 1,238-1,073.
Martin also posted scores of 219, 195, 169 and 206. Amanda Lac of Hawaii Baptist is in third with 1,057, followed by Chelsea Camello of Waiakea (1,050) and Baldwin’s Brooke Higa (1,039).
Maryknoll leads the girls standings with 4,750 pins, with Hawaii Baptist (4,737) second and Pearl City (4,704) third.
Emerald Leong is tops among Spartans with a haul of 1,014, good for eighth place.
