The Internal Revenue Service and its partners are looking for volunteers to help prepare individual tax returns through the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs. More than 400 Hawaii residents participated last year and prepared more than 18,000 federal and state returns. Volunteers are certified to prepare simple tax returns for people whose incomes are $50,000 or less. Training is usually held between November and January. Once certified, volunteers spend as little as three to four hours per week volunteering between the months of February and April.
To help, email taxvolunteer@irs.gov or contact Misti, volunteer program coordinator at Goodwill Industries of Hawaii, 792-8564; or Roy, with Leeward Community College’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, 455-0294.
