Haiku woman killed in Makawao crash

A 31-year-old Haiku woman died in a single-vehicle crash in Makawao on Saturday morning, Maui police said.

The woman, identified as Tawny M. Yarborough, was driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander traveling east on Olinda Road at 1:22 a.m. Police said the Highlander missed a left curve in the road and hit the concrete base of a light pole and overturned.

Yarborough was ejected from the Highlander onto the road and died from her injuries, police said.

She was not wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the front seat of the Highlander was wearing her seat belt and suffered minor injuries, police said. The passenger, a 33-year-old Kula woman, was treated and released from the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

The death is the 15th traffic fatality for Maui, compared to 10 at the same time last year.
