Arraignment of the last of four police officers charged with falsifying documents to get more overtime pay has been continued until October.
District Judge Faye Koyanagi granted the request Monday from the attorney for Sgt. Aaron Bernal because the police commission has not yet decided whether to pay for attorney’s fees. Bernal’s arraignment is now set for Oct. 5.
Three other officers — Christopher and Patrick Bugarin and Sgt. Duke Zoller — have entered not guilty pleas on charges of theft and tampering with government records and were given trial dates of Sept. 19 before Circuit Judge Ed Kubo.
In May, Kubo dismissed the charges against the four police officers because the case had taken too long to go to trial. Kubo, however, allowed prosecutors to refile the case.
The four have been charged again and are accused of putting the names of the two sergeants on arrest reports to show that they were at DUI checkpoints when they weren’t so that they could increase the chances of gaining overtime later if defendants challenged the arrests in court.
