OHA awarding nearly $1 million in grants
Nearly $1 million in grants is being awarded to organizations that will use the money to improve the conditions of Native Hawaiians.
The Office of Hawaiian Affairs announced Monday it is giving the money to the University of Hawaii’s school of social work and three nonprofit groups.
OHA says the funding will support programs designed to instill in students an interest in social justice, showcase Hawaiian values, cultivate crops important to Hawaiian culture and strengthen Hawaiian civic clubs.
OHA Chairwoman Colette Machado said the efforts will prepare Native Hawaiians for future opportunities.
About $210,000 is going to the university, $400,000 to Hawaii Maoli-Hoolako Na Kiwila Hawaii Project, $150,000 to Community Art Mural Project — Puuhonua Society and $150,000 to Alii Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club.
