Brush fire burns part of noni tree farm in Haleiwa
A stubborn brush fire in Haleiwa Monday afternoon burned about 10 acres, including part of a noni tree farm, before it was brought under control by firefighters about 4:40 p.m.
Five engine companies and two tanker companies responded to the fire near Haleiwa and Paalaa roads just outside Haleiwa town, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
Haleiwa Road was shut down for a time, but was reopened shortly before 5 p.m. Paalaa Road, between Haleiwa Road and Aukai Lane remained closed for cleanup, according to Seelig and police dispatch.
About three-fourths of a noni orchard was damaged either directly from flames or associated heat, Seelig said. Authorities were trying to identify and locate the owners.
