The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens announced one of its large corpse plants is in full bloom, at about six feet tall, on the Big Island Wednesday.

The rare flowering plant is known for its large, un-branched flower. The zoo has nicknamed the plant “Stinky 1,” as the fragrance it emits is similar to that of rotting meat. The odor attracts carrion-feeding beetles and flies that pollinate the plant.

The zoo has two of these plants, which were donated in 2002. The plants were estimated to be about 2 years old when donated and have been at the zoo for the past nine years.

The corpse plant is located next to the feral pig and across from the large mixed parrot aviary at the facilities.

The zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
