Female veteran is new HPD assistant chief
Honolulu Police Department veteran Maj. Susan Dowsett was promoted this week to the rank of assistant chief.
Dowsett, a 28-year veteran, has been the major in charge of the Narcotics/Vice Division the last three years.
She is one of two women among the six assistant chiefs. Her new position was made available by the retirement of Bryan Wauke earlier this summer.
Police Chief Louis Kealoha also promoted on Wednesday three officers to major, four to captain, eight to lieutenant, 10 to sergeant and 16 to corporal. HPD declined to release their names.
Broken ankle, darkness strand hiker overnight
Fire rescue personnel airlifted a Waipahu man with a possibly broken ankle from the Na Pali Coast wilderness area Thursday morning, Kauai County reported.
The 33-year-old man had been hiking with friends Wednesday afternoon when he reportedly broke his right ankle near Hanakapiai Falls.
He called for help at 6:19 p.m. Rescue personnel aboard the Fire Department helicopter had only enough time Wednesday to lower a rescue specialist into the valley before nightfall forced the aircraft to return to Lihue Airport.
The rescuer hiked into the area and stayed with the hiker overnight. The helicopter returned at daybreak Thursday to pick up both men. It flew to Princeville Airport, where medical personnel took the hiker to Wilcox Hospital.
Recycling effort to end on Kauai after 10 months
Kauai County said a pilot curbside recycling program in Puhi and portions of Lihue will end this month.
About 1,300 homes were involved in the program, which began last fall. An average of 28.78 pounds of recyclable materials was collected from each home each month, Kauai County Engineer Larry Dill said in a news release. About 70 percent of the material collected during the 10-month program was mixed paper, cardboard and newspaper.
The program will end on Aug. 18 for Puhi residents and Aug. 25 for participating neighborhoods in central Lihue. The county said data collected will help plan future recycling programs.
