The future of the Kula Kai, Hawaii’s last aku fishing sampan, could include transforming it into a maritime museum, a shipwrights’ classroom or both.

“We’ve been tossing a lot of ideas around, but there are no firm plans yet,” Charles Barclay, Kewalo Basin harbor manager, said Wednesday.

The Hawaii Community Development Authority voted 8-0 Wednesday to donate the 64-year-old vessel to the Kewalo Keiki Fishing Conservancy, a nonprofit maritime education organization, “for preservation and education,” said Anthony Ching, HCDA executive director.

The authority also approved waiving mooring fees owed by the previous owner, and spending up to $50,000 to move the Kula Kai out of Kewalo Basin.

The 88-foot long boat will be lifted by a crane and moved to its new home on land at the conservancy in the coming weeks, Ching said.

The conservancy is next to the Children’s Discovery Center and the former John Dominis Restaurant in Kakaako.

Scotty Furushima, director of Kewalo Keiki, said the “boat is a work in progress” and it could take a while before the conservancy opens the sampan to the public.
