Staff from Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kauai’s north shore are planning to hold an open house next week to answer questions and take comments on ideas for managing the refuge. 

The open house is scheduled for next week Wednesday in the Kilauea Elementary School cafeteria.

Staff have created an initial set of draft alternatives for managing the refuge based on feedback they received during meetings with community and neighborhood groups, government agencies and interested individuals. 

The refuge was created in 1985 when the U.S. Coast Guard transferred land and an historic lighthouse to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. 

The ocean cliffs and open grassy slopes of the area provide breeding grounds for native Hawaiian seabirds and nene, the endangered Hawaiian goose.
