Health Department urges public to pick drinks with less sugar
The state Department of Health is launching a campaign to urge the public to choose beverages with less sugar.
Health officials said in a news release Tuesday the campaign through the Kauai and Maui district health offices is to highlight the health impact of increased consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks.
The media campaign warns “Don’t Drink Yourself Fat” and is part of a comprehensive effort to reduce obesity and chronic disease in Hawaii.
Health officials say adult obesity in Hawaii has almost doubled between 1995 and 2009.
The campaign is part of the Communities Putting Prevention to Work initiative which includes promotion of consuming locally grown produce and encouraging more physical activity.
