Hawaiian Electric Co. crews were out in force Sunday in response to a pair of unusual, unrelated accidents that affected service to Kailua and Mililani.

Shortly after 1:30 a.m., a motor vehicle crashed into an electric pole on Kihapai Street, causing the pole to fall and cutting power to nearly 1,200 customers in the surrounding area, including Castle Medical Center, Foodland and the YMCA.

HECO personnel worked throughout the morning to reroute customers to other circuits. By 6:23 a.m., power had been restored to all but 290 customers. Power was fully restored by early afternoon.

As the situation in Kailua was being resolved, gusty winds in Mililani knocked down a tree, which completely blocked the two-lane Mililani Memorial Park Road and damaged two electric poles. Mililani Memorial Park and Mortuary was left without power.

Crews from HECO, the city and county, and the Honolulu Fire Department worked together to clear the tree and restore power to the facility.
