‘Bows eager to face Fresno State, its ace

The Hawaii Rainbows haven’t forgotten what Fresno State’s Greg Gonzalez did to them last year.

Just ask their leader.

"I know I’m going to get him, I’ve already said that," junior Kolten Wong said. "I’m going to get this guy good and something’s going to happen where I’m either going to hit a home run or go 4-for-4 or something.

"He got us last year and it’s not going to happen again."

The biggest series of the Western Athletic Conference season gets under way today as the first-place Rainbows (22-17, 7-1) face No. 13 Fresno State (28-7, 8-3) in their first road game in nearly two months.

» FSU: RHP Greg Gonzalez (7-0, 1.31); LHP Josh Poytress (5-0, 2.27); LHP Tyler Linehan (2-1, 3.20); TBA

Gonzalez, who threw a seven-inning no-hitter against the ‘Bows last year at Les Murakami Stadium, will start the opener for a Bulldogs team that has hovered in the top 20 of the national rankings for most of the season.

Still, they trail the ‘Bows by a half-game in the WAC with the conference tournament looming in four weeks.

"The postseason really starts now, and we’ve been looking forward to this series for awhile," sophomore Pi‘ikea Kitamura said. "We got off to a good start and every game is really important from here on out because we want to be playing well heading into the tournament."

Hawaii appears to be healthy entering the series, as junior Jesse Moore expects to return to the field and right-hander Matt Sisto says he’s fine following his last start, in which he was taken out in the second inning with discomfort in his right elbow against Valparaiso.

"I was a little stiff last weekend and decided to be safe and not try to throw through it and make sure I’m ready for this weekend," said Sisto, who felt no pain during a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Hawaii is 9-1 when Moore starts at shortstop, which is what the infielder/pitcher expects to happen this weekend. Moore has twice had his shoulder pop out on him in the past six weeks, but says it’s just a matter of tolerating the pain.

"It’s kind of a luck of the draw what happens, but I’ve just got to be smart about it, but at the same time, not change the way I play," said Moore, who took batting practice for the first time in 10 days on Tuesday. "I’ve just got to go out there and play and not think about it and hope for the best."

Fresno State and Hawaii rank 1-2 in the WAC in pitching and have the four best pitchers in the league based on ERA. Gonzalez, who is 7-0 and leads the league with a 1.31 ERA, squares off against Sisto (3-4), who ranks fourth with an ERA of 2.48.

Left-hander Josh Poytress (5-0, 2.27) is expected to start tomorrow’s game for Fresno, while the Rainbows have moved senior Zach Gallagher, who trails only Gonzalez with a 2.00 ERA, into the No. 3 spot in the rotation.

Hawaii hasn’t won a regular-season series against the Bulldogs since 2007, but took two of three against Fresno State in the WAC tournament last year to claim its first conference championship in 18 years.

"We’ve wanted to play (Fresno) for so long already because we know how good they are and we love testing out abilities against (good teams)," said Wong, who is hitting an even .400 for the season. "I hate the fact that we lost two out of three in one of our last series at home and that’s stung a little bit, but we’re excited to get back out there and play and go out there and win this thing."
