UH baseball: Hawaii beats No. 13 Fresno State 6-5 in 10 innings

Lenny Linsky got Justin Charles to bounce out to first with the tying run on base and Hawaii beat No. 13 Fresno State 6-5 in the first of a four-game series at Pete Beiden Field in Fresno, Calif., on Friday night.

The save was Linsky’s ninth this season.

Zack Swasey was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs and two RBIs and Sean Montplaisir doubled twice and drove in two runs.

Swasey and Montplaisir each doubled with two outs in the first inning to score three runs and give Hawaii a 3-0 lead over Fresno State midway through the first inning.

Jordan Ribera answered with a two-run homer off of UH pitcher Matt Sisto with two outs in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 3-2.

The home run was Ribera’s fourth this season and 40th of his career.

The Bulldogs added an unearned run in the second when Aaron Judge scored on a groundout by Pat Hutcheson.

Ribera put the Bulldogs up 4-3 in the third with a base hit to score Dusty Robinson, who singled and stole second.

Junior Randy Yard started the fourth inning for Sisto, who allowed four runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in three innings.

Fresno State starter Greg Gonzalez entered the game 7-0 with a 1.33 ERA. He pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against UH last season at Les Murakami Stadium.

Gonzalez left after five innings, allowing three unearned runs on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Jeff Van Doornum greeted reliever Cody Kendall with a ground-rule double and UH scored on an RBI single by Swasey and a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded by pinch hitter Collin Bennett to give the Rainbows a 5-4 lead.

Yard pitched 3 2/3 innings, leaving with two outs in the seventh after giving up a double to Kenny Wise. Blair Walters needed one pitch to get Brennan Gowens to pop out to the pitcher to end the inning.

Yard allowed two hits and no walks with five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth when a two-out RBI single by Danny Muno off Blair Walters scored Daniel Moultrie.

Van Doornum flied out to right with men on first and second in the ninth.

The Rainbows took the lead in the 10th inning when Montplaisir scored on a wild pitch by Bulldogs closer Charlie Robertson.

Walters (5-1) allowed one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings to earn the win.

Robertson walked three men in the 10th to drop to 0-4 overall.

The Rainbows (23-17, 8-1) moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Fresno State (28-8, 8-4).
