UH softball: Wahine lose to Boise State 2-1

Boise State pitcher Aubray Zell held Hawaii to five hits to lead the Broncos to a 2-1 win tonight in the opening game of a Western Athletic Conference softball series at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Boise State designated player Christina Capobianco’s two-run homer in the fifth inning proved to be just enough for Zell, who struck out four and walked none while keeping the Rainbow Wahine off balance throughout the game.

UH junior Stephanie Ricketts struck out six and walked four and took the loss.

UH scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Kelly Majam lined a single into left field and advanced to second on an error. Jessica Iwata followed with a sharp single up the middle to score Majam. Iwata went to second on a wild pitch, but Zell got a strike out and a popup to preserve the Boise State lead.

UH put the tying run on base with one out in the seventh on Sarah Robinson’s infield single, but a strikeout and ground out ended the game.

The series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
