LaTech hands Hawaii first WAC loss

Hawaii's Kolten Wong slid safely into second when Louisiana Tech's Austin Hedges couldn't handle the throw.

Louisiana Tech starter Mike Jefferson tossed eight shutout innings and Caleb Dudley finished off a 3-0 shutout of Hawaii on Sunday afternoon to end the Rainbows’ eight-game winning streak.

Dudley earned his sixth save of the season, getting Breland Almadova to ground out to third with runners on the corners.

All three runs were scored in the top of the first inning.

UH starter Connor Little walked the first two batters and hit the third with a pitch. Alex Williams drove in two with a single and a passed ball allowing Mark Threlkeld to score to give LaTech a 3-0 lead.

Little (3-2) wound up lasting six innings, matching a career high with eight strikeouts.

Jefferson (4-2) struck out six and walked two, giving up six hits.

Kolten Wong tripled in the first with two outs, but was stranded on third. The Rainbows loaded the bases in the second inning with one out but couldn’t score.

Kalani Brackenridge started at third base and Pi‘ikea Kitamura moved to shortstop after junior Jesse Moore injured his shoulder in pregame warmups.

Hawaii (20-15, 6-1) is a game ahead of Fresno State after the Bulldogs’ game against Nevada was canceled.

Louisiana Tech improved to 18-17 overall and 3-4 in league play.

The series ends on Monday night at 6:35.
