Isle woman arrested in assault

A New Mexico State University softball star from Waimanalo was arrested April 5 for allegedly assaulting a teammate.

Randolyn "Hoku" Nohara, a 2007 Kamehameha Schools graduate, allegedly choked her teammate on April 5, causing the woman to nearly black out, police reported.

According to the Las Cruces Police Department, the assault began when Nohara and the woman were arguing in a home about a rumor. The dispute became physical, and Nohara began choking the woman, said Dan Trujillo, Las Cruces Police Department spokesman. Roommates or teammates were able to pull the two apart, he said.

The victim, who had a bloody nose, went to the hospital to be checked out. The woman told officers she nearly lost consciousness as Nohara choked her for 45 to 60 seconds, Trujillo said.

Nohara was charged with aggravated battery, a third-degree felony, and posted $1,000 bail, the Las Cruces Sun-News said. The paper said the victim was also a Kamehameha Schools graduate.

Nohara did not respond to an attempt to contact her through her Facebook page.

New Mexico State athletics officials suspended Nohara for three games last weekend.

During her suspension, the Aggies lost one game to Fresno State, dropping their undefeated ranking in the Western Athletic Conference, but remain tied for first place (8-1) with Boise State in the WAC.

New Mexico State Athletics Director McKinley Boston said in a statement that Nohara was reinstated to the team after the athletic department’s social misconduct committee recommended missed games and community service. She will play Friday against Nevada. "I accepted the committee’s recommendations pending the adjudication of the case in the legal system," he said.

Nohara, 21, leads the Western Athletic Conference in several categories for softball and leads the nation with 19 home runs. She holds second place nationally for getting on base. She is also a former world-class powerlifter and Hawaii state champion in wrestling and judo.

Nohara, a senior infielder, is one of the team’s best players and smashed the school’s record with 40 career home runs and 136 career RBIs last year. She leads the WAC in batting average, slugging percentage, total bases, RBIs and other areas.

According to New Mexico State, she is a 13-time world record holder in the bench press, benching 352 pounds and racking 407 pounds in the dead lift.
