A suspected car thief who was shot after firing a shotgun at officers near Kalani High School this afternoon has died at a hospital, police said.

The armed man had fired at police and was trying to carjack a second car when he was shot and critically wounded by police, police said. He was not identified.

A second car-theft suspect, said to be a partner of the first man, was arrested in Aina Haina after he allegedly fled from the initial stolen car and carjacked another car.

He was identified as Michael Edward Manning, 35, of no local address. He was booked for investigation of three counts of first-degree robbery.

Two other people refused treatment at the scene, the spokesman said. Police said the two are civilians. No police officers were hurt, police said.

“One of the civilians was injured when he was struck by (Manning) when he was still in his car,” police Maj. Richard Robinson said The other civilian “received minor injuries when he was at the collision between the suspect and the police officers,” Robinson said.

Deputy Police Chief Randy Macadangdang described this sequence of events:

About 3 p.m., a caller reported two males breaking into a car in the University area and driving off. About 10 minutes later, officers were following the car on Kalanianaole Highway near Kalani High School when it crashed into the median on Kalanianaole Highway.

“The two males then ran from the vehicle, one armed with a shotgun. The armed male ran in the mauka, or mountain direction,” Macadangdang said.

“Officers were pursuing the (armed) suspect on foot when he turned and fired at them. The suspect was in the process of trying to steal another vehicle with someone in it when another officer in a marked police car drove between the armed suspect and driver.

“The suspect again fired at the officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect.”

The second male ran from the stolen car into a residential area makai of Kalanianaole Highway, Macadangdang said. There he punched a driver and stole a vehicle. He drove east on Kalanianaole, striking multiple vehicles, Robinson said.

Police arrested that man near Holy Nativity Church on Nenue Street.

Police closed Kalanianaole Highway and diverted eastbound traffic onto Wakui Street and westbound traffic at Ainakoa Street. Traffic remained backed-up for hours even after the highway was reopened.

Aina Haina resident Kimberly Seko said she was driving on Kalanianaole toward Hawaii Kai when she saw a young man running in her direction, firing shots and then being shot in the leg.

Seko, 26, said the man fell on the road right next to the sidewalk in the right-most townbound lane of Kalanianaole right at the Ainakoa intersection.

The gunman was carrying a shotgun as he ran toward town, Seko said. About a dozen students — some of them screaming — ran down Kalanianaole away from the shooter.

When police ordered him to stop, she saw him point his weapon in the direction of her car and other vehicles that had stopped because of the commotion and fire one shot.

At that point, the motorist in the lane to the right of her ducked and she ducked, too. She heard a second shot.

“I heard what sounded like fireworks, it was really loud.”

She added: “It was kinda scary. He just started shooting random shots.”
Officers then fired back and she watched as one bullet hit him in what appeared to his leg, she said.

About four officers then converged on him. “A female officer kicked the shotgun away,” Seko said. Officers handcuffed the man.

Kelle Vandenberg of Ainakoa Avenue, said she was taking out the trash when she heard a crash then four or five gunshots.

“I saw the guy fall,” she said. “He was just laying down on the ground.”

She described the man was young and thin. “His eyes were open,” she said. “He was really sweating.”

Vandenberg said she believed the man was trying to carjack a truck.

There was a police car with an apparent bullet hole in the windshield.

Police said there were four crime scenes between Aina Haina and Ainakoa Avenue, including at Holy Nativity Church.

Mark Deaton, of Ainakoa Avenue, was watching television when he said he heard the gunfire.

“I heard gun shots … a 9 mm … five or six shots,” he said. “Then all of a sudden all you can hear was police.”

At the corner of Kalanianaole Highway and Ainakoa Avenue, he said he saw a pickup raised up on two wheels and pinned between a van and a police car. A long firearm, possibly a rifle, was on the ground near the van and a young man of about 18 years old lay on the ground, he said.

The man was wounded in the leg and placed on a stretcher, he said.

Two other vehicles, a purple Honda Civic and a burgundy BMW sedan were damaged between Kalaniiki Street and Ainakoa Avenue.
